To start the game, each player draws ten white "answer" cards. One randomly chosen player begins as the Card Czar, and plays a black "question" card. The Card Czar reads the question out to the group. Each player answers the question by passing one white "answer" card, face down, to the Card Czar. The Card Czar shuffles all of the answers, reads them out loud in a humorous fashion, and picks their favorite. Whoever played that answer gets to keep the Black Card as one Awesome Point. After each round, a new player becomes the Card Czar, and every player draws back up to ten cards.

How did Cards Against Humanity come about?
The game was actually created by High School alumni from Highland Park High School. They created it as a New Year's Eve party celebration game. The original name of the game was "Hyper-theticals" and it was played by having the players write out the funniest, and most abstract response to the question of topic.
At a later time the name was changed to Cards Against Humanity and the game then consisted of cards with the questions of topic pre-written on black cards, and the answers pre-written on white cards. One of the co-creators, Ben Hantoot, in an interview stated that their inspiration for the game came from other games they had played such as The Gathering, Magic, Charades and Balderdash. He also said that there were 8 of them who were the core creators of the game with several developers that worked part time and a bunch of acquaintances and friends that had played the game who helped in the brainstorming of the final outcome.
